Are there tips for using JAWS for Windows with Terminal Emulation programs?

Question

Are there tips for using JAWS for Windows with Terminal Emulation programs?

Answer

Below are some simple tips to help JAWS best interact with Terminal Emulation packages such as Attachmate Extra or Reflections, Hummingbird, or Chameleon:

  1. Ensure that when in the emulation screen, the session is maximized.
  2. Your cursor is a blinking underline cursor, at the fastest rate possible. This helps JAWS best track the cursor.
  3. Font Recommendations for use within your emulation session:
    • Select a plain font such as Times New Roman, Aerial, or Courier New.
    • Recommended font size is between 8 and 10.
    • JAWS may track better with small font sizes, especially if you are using a Braille display.
  4. If blank spaces are spoken as tab spaces, you can adjust this via the JAWS Settings Center, Pixels per Tab option. Type "99" into the edit box and then choose OK to close Settings Center.

NOTE: This does not apply to TelNet or Putty style applications.
